About

Role in the KNI

Barry Baker's role in the KNI team is to provide help with new project installations as well as doing any needed maintenance on equipment. On a daily basis he conducts a walkthrough of the labs, including the Keck Lab that houses the Tecnai TF-30 TEM.

Experience

Barry has been with KNI since Oct 2017. Before that, he spent from April 2011 to October 2017 being the Laboratory Manager for Dr. Oskar Painter at the California Institute of Technology. He was responsible for taking care of three optical labs and a cleanroom facility for the research group. In Oskar's group, he was the lead person for installations of many new pieces of equipment including two dilution refrigerators, an e-beam evaporator and an atomic layer deposition (ALD) tool.

List of Lab Responsibilities

Daily
  • Lab Walkthrough
  • Backup to the Lab Coordinator
Equipment
  • Chillers
  • Tecnai TF-30 service chase

Project involvement

Sputter tool installation

Along with Alex and Bert, Barry was involved with the installation of all utilities needed for the sputter tools, including all water, compressed dry air (CDA), N2 and gas lines.

ALD installation

Along with Nathan and Bert, Barry was involved with the installation of all utilities for the new ALD system. This included running new gas lines and manifolds for the etching service chase as well as CDA, N2 and water lines.

Personal

Barry was born in Colorado but moved very soon after that to California. He spent his childhood in San Diego then moved to Orange County when he was 24 to pursue a job opportunity, which did not work out, but he decided to stay in the LA area since. Barry currently lives in Azusa, CA with the love of his life, Mindy, and their fur baby daughter, Baxter, a rescue dog that has changed their lives for the good!

Barry has a few hobbies that include RC cars and golf (which he cannot play anymore due to back surgeries)... hopefully he can again someday. He also loves to attend live sporting events like LA Dodger and LA Kings games with Mindy. He and Mindy love the Dodgers!!! Barry is also a LA Kings and Dallas Cowboys fan. He likes to watch motorsports on TV like Motocross Racing, NASCAR and Formula 1.

Barry is usually the jokester in the bunch and tries to keep a light attitude around him. He tries to have fun at all times but can be serious when it is necessary.
